Does anyone know if airfares go down the closer you get to the date, or do they usually go up? I tried booking a ticket home for the summer (I live in Japan) on Orbitz, but it timed out. By the time I was able to get back online the next day, the fares had already skyrocketed! I heard the fares fluxuate, but this is redicules! Anyone know if you keep checking in on airfares, do they sometimes go down, or do other airlines sometimes offer more discount airfares from time to time? It is driving me nuts!

I need to find websites that would offer deep discounts for airfare.? One-way leaving Huntsville, Alabama on March 23,08 (Easter Sunday) to Chicago, IL Preferrably anything under $300.00. Thanks = )
Does anyone know of an airline that offers discounts for toddlers (2 yrs.)? I have been searching airfares for an upcoming trip for my son and I. I've searched expedia, hotwire, and travelocity. So far, no one is offering a discount for a toddler. Do you know of any airline that does? I can call them directly to book a flight if I have to. I was under the impression I could take him as a lap child, because I have done this many times before. However, I was shocked to find out that when they turn 2, you can't do that anymore. They are no longer considered an infant and do not get the infant discount.
What are the cheapest options to fly one-way from Europe to the US? I am hoping for any suggestions on discount airfares/websites from Europe to the northeastern US. I currently have one flight remaining on a multi-destination ticket that will return me to London from Bangkok. I purchased this ticket because it was significantly cheaper to depart from the UK than the US. At the time I found a really cheap one-way flight to Ireland($235) from Newark, but I am having less luck with a connecting one-way flight home. I don't expect to find such a good deal to return home, but I have a hunch that there are different websites that specialize on travel to the US from Europe than US based websites that offer good deals departing from the US. Since Ryanair has coverage around much of the continent, I am fairly flexible about where I fly from in Europe. I hope to return to the East Coast of the US anywhere between Wash D.C. and Boston-whatever's cheapest ; ) Please share any information and suggestions about this you may have. Thanks for your help.
How come our military isn't offered free airfare? Everyone I know is schocked when I tell them my son has to pay his own airfare home, doesn't even get a discount? Can't our airlines even offer them HALF? I'm not saying the airlines should give them a free ride, but our federal government that flies our senators, congressman, all around and puts them up at fancy 4 and 5 star hotels could take a few cuts themselves. They eat for free!
www.studentuniverse.com...for real? Curious if anyone knows anything about this site? Are their discounted airfares real?? I am a college student was pleased to find a site that offers discounts. Thanks.

How to get people to buy a cruise vacation? I now have a website for people to buy travel online (I'm a new travel agent). I was thinking of advertising in newspapers for a "special" price on a cruise. Do people actually buy cruises they see listed in the newspaper or should I think of something else? I wanted to offer a discount package for people in the midwest that would include airfare & the cruise (from florida to the bahamas). Any suggestions???

Airfare discounts for military and/or just in general? Our son is coming home on a short leave (before he leaves for the Middle East) and I have been searching everywhere for a good deal on airline tickets for his travel. I have heard about discounts one can get based on being in the military, but found nothing really other than an effective stand-by status, which he cannot do this time due to time constraints. Does anyone have an awesome contact/site they can offer up for the best deal possible? It would be so greatly appreciated! I am just trying to help him save the most money, he is going to need it. Thank you =)

Anyone know of a site offering discounted vacations that originate in Dubai? (UAE - United Arab Emirates)? I am looking for a website like Virgin-Vacations.com. Something that has hotel, airfare, or a cruise, even, in one package - but that originates with flights from Abu Dhabi or Dubai or Sharjah in the UAE. Help! Thanks!
How can you really tell if you're getting the best airfare rate? All the discount sites say they have the best pricing, then you go to the airline's site and they say you'll not find any of their flights for less anywhere else (some even a double the difference back offer). Is there anyway you can truly guarantee you've found the best rate? Any recommendations?
Groups that offer travel discounts besides AAA? Besides AAA are there any other groups and associations that help you to get discounts on travel expenses such as hotel bookings, airfare, and rental cars?

Would you pay 399 dollars if you could travel at wholesale prices and obtain travel agents discounts/upgrades? The travel membership is a one time fee. The company offers travel packages throughout the year. For example, a trip to Playa Del Carmen for 5 days and 4 nights for 599 per person. This includes room, food, and airfare from DFW.
Potential long term consequences (especially on kids) of working & living far away from them for ~ two years? My wife and I both feel that we got married and started having kids too soon. There's nothing we can do about that now, but there is one very bright silver lining; we still have a very good relationship with each other, and we are committed to our marriage and to our family. That said, here's the situation I'm facing now, and I would appreciate any wisdom you would care to impart. My wife and I are blessed with two wonderful kids, who are ~3 and ~1 yrs old. As much as I adore them, I am considering living away from them for about two years. The situation is complicated (as you'll see below if you read on), but in a nutshell, I have recently been offered a great job on another coast. If I take this job across the country from them, I would make about $95,000. By my standards I consider that to be a Lot of money, especially considering that I would be living in a rural area with a low cost of living. The attractive salary is appealing mostly because of the sound financial footing it could put my family on (more on that later). It also happens to be a dream job, from a career perspective. If I move out there to take this job, I would plan to live reasonably (I know how to live on $35,000, and would plan to have the lifestyle of a responsible person making that much) so that I could save some money - all while providing a modest but decent (and improved - starting with a decent used minivan in place of the compact car we're driving now) standard of living for my family back home. My wife and kids, by the way, have a great support system back home, anchored by my wonderful and very supportive parents-in-law, who run a daycare. My wife is not willing to relocate. But if I do take this job, my wife and kids would come to be with me when she has vacation, which would be at least 3 weeks (and possibly 7 weeks for reasons that I don't need to get into) every year. I would spend all of my vacation time in our 'hometown', so this all adds up to at least 6 weeks together every year (possibly 10 weeks, again for reasons that aren't important). I realize that that is not much or even enough time together, but at the same time, it would be a far cry from never seeing each other. Also, traveling back and forth would not be a huge expense for us because we are eligible for discounted airfare due to a family airline connection - this would allow us to save even more money - and saving money of course would be one of the main justifications for living apart. But saving money just for the sake of it is definitey Not the goal here (niether my wife nor I are very materialistic, in my estimation). Due to our working and (what I consider to be) our fiscally responsible lifestyle, neither my wife nor I have any debt any longer - however we don't have much money, either (to give you an idea - she and the kids have been living with her parents, while I have been working temporary but reasonably well-paying jobs away from home). There would be two main justifications for my taking this job. Number one is that it provides an opportunity to stock away a moderate amount of money, in a relatively short period of time, for the purpose of putting a down payment on a modest but decent home in a couple of years - and to achieve a basic level of financial stability. Secondly (not as important but still important) it provides me an opportunity to work a great job in my field of study (I just graduated last year, and honestly I would consider it a big sacrifice to give up my career this early after graduating - and an important point here is that jobs in my career really don't exist yet in our hometown). I would plan to return to our hometown to live in about two years, at which point our kids would be 5 and 3, I'd be there when our oldest begins school, and it is generally expected that by that time, jobs in my field will be more widely available in our 'hometown'. As far as getting a job closer to home now, I could probably arrange that, but it would almost certainly pay less than half of what I could make at this job that I'm considering that is far away from them, and at present my field of work is virtually non existent in our 'hometown', so I would have to change careers or (more likely) or take a job that has little meaning to me (btw the debt that I recently got out of was mostly incurred getting an education in the field that I now have an opportunity to work in). And btw I'm not implying that my career is more important than spending time with my kids - please remember that one of the major motivations for taking the far away job would be to provide a better life for all of us. So my question is, is it worth the sacrifice? Thank you in advance for your thoughts.. and for reading all of this!
If one chooses dental work done at a school for denistry,is there a great discount, like for an IMPLANT? I had a baaaaaaad bad a$$ molar ripped right outta my skull Friday. Its healing beautifully actually. In the near-far future [within the next yr.] I'm shooting for an implant. I ASSUME going to a nearby dental school would offer fees atleast half price. I LIVE IN THE NEW YORK AREA. [1.5 hrs. from Manhattan] PLEASE don't mentioned other countries or Costa Rica. By the time I pay for hotels, airfare, ect. I may as well pay full price here in the states. ... besides when go to CR, just plan to chill on the beach and toss popcorn at the toucans and monkeys. Thanx anyway, I really don't want to be concerned w/a sore mouth on a trip like that.
This is an Economy question about changes in the airline industry.? Turmoil in the Airline Industry Even before the September 11 terrorist attacks, the major airlines were flying into stiff head winds. Slim to nonexistent profits, bankruptcies and buckets of red ink, poor service, late arrivals, overexpansion, frequent air-traffic control breakdowns, some of the worst labor-management relations in business, high fuel costs, a full-blown economic downturn, and the collapse of business travel had cast this industry into one of the worst periods in aviation history. Road Warriors Get Smart For years, the major airlines had succeeded in getting business travelers (road warriors) to pay premium fares by pampering them with special business-class seats and other perks. Business travel was their lifeblood. Sales of unrestricted fares and last-minute tickets generated about two to three times as much as economy fares and contributed about 70 percent of a major airline?s revenue. But with corporate profits hitting the skids in late 2000, companies put the brakes on travel spending. The corporate exodus hit the major airlines hard. Resourceful business travelers used substitute products such as videoconferencing or other transportation modes ? even if it meant putting up with inconveniences ? to reduce travel expenses. Some turned to the Internet to find cheaper airfares. Others moved their business downstream to discount airlines such as Southwest and Jet Blue. Major airlines tried to raise round-trip leisure tickets to make up for their lost business revenues, but fierce competition from discounters prevented them from doing so. Air Travel is ?Wal-Marted? Just as Wal-Mart did in retailing, the discounters of the air such as Southwest and Jet Blue are squeezing the major airlines from all ends. Low-cost carriers now account for nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic air capacity, up from 6 percent in the early 1990?s. They can afford to sell travel tickets for less because they have many cost advantages over full-service rivals. To begin with, they have younger fleets, which require less maintenance, and younger labor forces that aren?t tied to complicated, inefficient labor contracts. Moreover, low-fare carriers typically fly one airplane model, thus minimizing maintenance, operating, and training costs. By contrast, big carriers typically fly six or seven types of aircraft. And unlike the big guys, the discount airlines don?t operate expensive hub-and-spoke systems. Caught Between a Hub and a Hard Place Using a hub-and-spoke route system, major airlines scoop up traffic from smaller cities (the spokes) and funnel it through a few gathering points (the hub). This practice allows airlines to serve small markets and offer passengers more destinations and more frequent flights. But is also presents a logistical nightmare. It forces major airlines to schedule lots of flights to arrive and depart within narrow windows of time in order to minimize passenger layover times. This means that ground crews, such as gate attendants and baggage handlers, often sit idle between waves of connecting flights. By Contrast, point-to-point carriers, such as Southwest and Jet Blue, schedule flights as if passengers are moving to their final destinations. Instead of having planes and crews sit around and wait for passengers, point-to-point carriers maintain fast-paced schedules, which means minimal downtime for aircraft and fewer personnel on the ground. Turbulent Skies for the Bid Carriers Today, one in four tickets sold is on a discount airline. As pressure from low-fare carriers mounts, major airlines are reevaluating every aspect of their operations. The major carriers are undergoing radical change just to stay in business. They are experimenting with changes in costs, capacity, pricing, and product features in ways they haven?t seriously contemplated since the industry was deregulated in 1978. They are stripping billions of dollars from their operations by revamping their hub system, cutting jobs, eliminating flights, ending food service, and removing first-class seats, and by simplifying their fleets to cut training and maintenance costs, Some are replacing agents with self-service kiosks. Others are wrangling concessions from unions for huge pay cuts to reduce labor costs ? a major differentiating factor when you consider that in 2002 a United Airlines captain earned $9,000 to $11,000 more a month than a Jet Blue captain. Still others, such as U.S. Airways and United Airlines have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize their outstanding debt and lower their operating costs. In spite of their efforts, questions loom as to whether all the major airlines can survive. Even with huge cost cuts, all airlines remain susceptible to possible terrorist attacks, economic turns, or employee unrest. As experts claim that this is just the beginning of an industry-wide shakedown. After all, no airline can fly forever losing billions of dollars. Critical Thinking Questions 1. What s 1. What supply and demand factors have changed the equilibrium point for airline tickets? 2. How has information technology affected the airline industry? 3. How are complimentary products affected by problems in the airline industry? 4. Take a closer look at the airline industry by logging on to http://www.hoovers.com, and type in Airlines for your search. List six domestic (U.S.) airlines and their locations and six international (global) airlines with their locations as well. 5. Why do U.S. airlines form alliances with overseas partners?
Cheapest Airfare from Phoenix, AZ to Ft. Walton Beach, FL? My dates are flexible - I'm looking to fly sometime between now and May--staying for two to five days--and would like to spend "ideally" between $200-$250 TOTAL. If anyone knows a place I can sign up and get discounts, i.e. groups/conventions/clubs that are offering discounts, please let me know! My boyfriend--whom I'm visiting--is in the Air Force, so I'm not certain if that makes a difference or not. ...Maybe coupon codes...? I'm willing to pay for this information. As of right now, I'm looking at $330-$380 round trip TOTAL price, and this is certainly too high. By the way, I've checked virtually ALL the travel sites, including but not limited to; Orbitz, Travelocity, Kayak, Cheap O Air, Priceline, Cheap Tickets, etc.--as well as virtually ALL of the airlines. So, please do not bother to list these as the options. Thank you!
Does anyone work at a Loews Hotel? I'm just wandering what employee perks they offer.? Hello all! I am planning a career change in 2010 and thought about going into the hotel industry. For an entry-level position such as a front desk agent can anyone tell me what the employee perks are. Discounted room rates? Discounted airfare? Discounts at restaurants/bars on site? Use of swimming pool?... Thanks in advance for your responses. I said Loews because that is the hotel I would like to work for however, I would like to learn about the perks of any hotel brand!

Discounted Child's airfare? Do any airlines offer this? Which ones?
WHY have WestJet, Airmiles, and BMO Mosaik MasterCard STABBED THEIR CUSTOMERS IN THE BACK? I used to be able to fly anywhere in Canada and in the US with WestJet for 1600 AirMiles using the BMO Mosaik MasterCard. NOT ANYMORE! WestJet, Airmiles and BMO Mosaik MasterCard have cancelled their agreement. Now BMO Mosaik gives a measily 20% discount on the regular number of AirMiles you would need to fly anywhere. Therefore WestJet, Airmiles and BMO Mosaik MasterCard have just DOUBLED the 1600 AirMiles I needed to fly anywhere in Canada and the US. Why should I keep my Mosaik MasterCard? Why should I continue flying with WestJet? Why should I continue to collect AirMiles? I am a single person with moderate income. There are MILLIONS of people like me! Cancelling the 1600 AirMiles offer is a STAB IN THE BACK for all of us who really needed this promotion and can't always afford to pay for regular airfares AND who don't spend enough to be able to accumulate the 3200+ AirMiles it takes to fly even within Canada. So they have just lost MILLIONS of customers!

Alaskan cruise in 2 years. How much would you estimate? My sister and I are thinking about taking an Alaskan cruise in the summer of 2012. We need to save up for it so we need an approximate price point including a couple of excursions. I don't need to get off at every port to take a tour, but a few. Forget airfare. Forget today's discounts that won't be there tomorrow. Please offer a general price with some justification plus any tips that you can think of. We just need to figure out how much we should be saving each month. I'm sure we could both come up with the little extra at the end since everything is more than you thought it would be, but where should we start? Thanks!
Payment dilemma for vacation? For our wedding gift, my parents gave me and my husband a week at their timeshare, where we can chose anywhere we want to go. We couldn't afford airfare or a rental car at the time, so we put it off for a later date. We will be going in October of this year as kind of a vacation. Now we've incurred problems paying for our airfare and rental car. We have all the money needed, no problem (we've been saving for 2 years). But our bank will only allow us to put $500/day on our debit card, and the total cost is way more than that. Our only credit card only has a $500 limit, and were not going to open a new one just for one vacation. So we have no real way to pay for it. My parents offered to let us use their credit card if we pay them the cash up front (which is no issue), but they refuse to let us use their cc number online. Over the phone or through a travel agent is the only way they will do that (they are older, and there is no convincing them otherwise). They keep telling us to go through their travel agent. She booked a trip for is several years ago, and we got royally screwed over on the rates (we paid the same amount we could have booked the nicest suite in the hotel for online for the crappiest rooms they had available). Needless to say, we do not want to repeat the experience. My parents have the money to have someone else do it for them, and don't have to worry about every penny. We do not have that luxury. So I guess my question is, is there any of the discount travel sites that will except my parents credit card when they will not be traveling, and can do it over the phone? Or any sites that will take direct transfers from a bank account (we can do that for more than $500 a day through the bank, but visa put the limit on the debit card)? Or just any other suggestions how to do this without paying the ridiculous fees of a travel agent? Also, I don't need to hear about how we manage our money, or the fact we only have 1 low limit credit card. We do great financially, and could have a higher limit card, but don't care to have that kind of temptation. And as I said, we have all the money to cover the trip and then some,, but sadly, no one takes cash anymore. And as one final note, the resort is free, since it is a timeshare and my parents "gifted" us the week. All we have to pay is taxes, and if we use room service or resort amenities.
