Travelling from London to Sydney, what are the best flight timings to minimise jetlag??
I'm flying from London to Sydney before Christmas. I have a choice of flights, some arrive Sydney first thing in the morning around 6am, some arrive Sydney in the evening around 8pm. Flights leave London between 12noon and 10pm. According to the airline chosen and the time waiting for a connecting flight, overall travel time varies between 23 and 32 hours. All flights I'm considering only have one stop. So my question is, what are the best flight timings (departure and arrival) to minimise jetlag? Thanks

- Take the one that takes the least amount of time. The 23-hour one seems best. Treat long flights going west as a very long day (or a very long night, depending on when you leave). If it’s a long day flight, take enough of a nap to take the edge off and to be able to stay awake until bedtime at your destination. If it’s a night flight going west, sleep as much as you can, knowing you will likely have a full day at the destination. Of course, it’s also advisable to be fully caught-up on your sleep at home the days prior to your departure.
- Shortest would be QANTAS with 21:20 hours via SIN/Singapore. BUT Expensive! USD3000 Less expensive would be Air France with 24:20 via CDG/Paris and HGK/Hong Kong USD1900 Tips: a- Try stop-overs: usually on this flights are FREE (i.e. Singapore or Hong-King or even Delhi!) to make your trip shorter! b- Try a round-the-world fares see: http://www.airtreks.com/ http://www.airbrokers.com/html/around_the_world_deals.php In any case, my recommendation is: leave as early as possible from LON, as the first part of the flight is always easier. Then eat your dinner and sleep as much as you can! When you arrive, just remember is 6AM, go all day long as nothing and to sleep at your usual time! Done! Enjoy "down-under"
- If you're the type of person who is able to sleep well on a plane, I think flights that arrive in the morning are best to alleviate jetlag, that way you wake up after a nights sleep and have the day in front of you, just like you would during a normal day at home. I fly to Asia from the US 6 or 7 times a year and have for the last 8 years or so and I try to be as tired as possible before the flight and sleep as much as I can on the flight, and always took the night departure, morning arrival flights when I could, if you can arrive fairly well rested, it will make a big difference. Try to resist taking a nap during your first couple of days and adjust your body clock to the new time zone as quickly as you can, it's hard to eliminate jetlag, especially on a flight that far, but you definitely can make it better There are many articles and advice on helping with jetlag, I'm sure if you googled or yahoo'd <jetlag> in your search engine, you can get some good advice. Good luck.
